Will AI Replace Web Designers? An Answer From One Who Uses It Every Day

By Measured 5 September 2026

AI has already replaced part of web design: the part that was making plausible-looking pages. What it has not replaced is knowing what the page should say to your customers, and that was always the job.

The short answer

AI has replaced the parts of web design that were production: generating layouts, writing first-draft copy, producing code for standard components, resizing images, making a page that looks like a website. It has not replaced deciding what a specific business’s site must say, in what order, at what price, to which customers, or knowing why the form should have three fields, what people type into Google, or what usually goes wrong on your jobs. Those decisions were always most of the value; the production was the visible part. The effect is that a plausible site is nearly free and a site that works costs about what the decisions cost. We use AI tools daily to build faster and price lower, and the build fee here is £500 partly because of it.

What has already been replaced

  • Generating a layout from a description. Builders do this in seconds and the result is competent.
  • First-draft copy. Every page on every AI-built site has a paragraph that says “we are passionate about delivering exceptional results”, because that is what a model writes when it does not know the business.
  • Standard code: a navigation, a form, a grid of cards, a responsive breakpoint. Developers now review and adjust this rather than type it.
  • Image work: resizing, background removal, format conversion, alt text drafts.
  • Debugging and searching documentation. Hours a week, gone.

None of that is a loss to a client. It is why a site can be built in a fortnight for a build fee that would have been a month and several thousand pounds five years ago. On this site the website price starts at £500, and that number is only possible because the production layer got cheap.

The evidence is in the search results. The pages holding page one for Manchester web design are not the best-looking; they are the ones with a price in the title, a named person, real reviews and pages that answer what people type. A single named designer holds second position for “web design in manchester” against agencies with three times his links. The decisions won; the production did not.

What it means if you are buying a website

  • A plausible site is nearly free. If that is all you need, use a builder and do not pay anyone.
  • A site that works costs what the decisions cost, and the decisions need someone who will learn your business. That is what the £500 build fee here buys: the decisions, with the production done fast.
  • Ask any designer how they use AI. “Not at all” means they are slower and dearer than they need to be. “For everything” means you will get the passionate-about-exceptional-results paragraph.
  • Judge a designer on measured results, a named person and what they tell you not to do, because those are the things a model cannot produce for them.

And will AI replace SEO?

The same shape. Tools now draft titles, cluster keywords and flag technical faults faster than a person. What they do not do is know which searches matter to your business, decide what to publish from first-hand experience, or earn a real link from a real site. AI answers in search results cite pages; on the cost and how-to queries we checked, they cite small UK sites with clear, sourced, first-hand answers. The work moved toward being worth citing. That is more work for a person, not less.

Common questions

Questions people actually search for.

Will AI replace web designers?

It has replaced the production part: layouts, first-draft copy, standard code, image work. It has not replaced deciding what a specific business’s site must say, to whom, at what price, in which words, or knowing whether it is working. A plausible site is nearly free; a site that works costs what the decisions cost.

Can AI build a website?

Yes, a plausible one in minutes. It will not know your customers, prices, area, the words people type or what goes wrong on your jobs, so the copy is generic and the structure is a guess. Fine for a brochure with no ambitions; not for a site that must be found and convert.

Is web design still in demand?

Yes, and the demand has moved to the decisions AI cannot make. The pages ranking on page one for Manchester web design are the ones with a price, a named person, reviews and pages that answer real searches, not the prettiest.

Should I use AI to build my business website?

Use it for a first draft and to save money on production. Then put in the real things: your prices, your area, your customers’ words, your photos, a named person, and measurement. A designer worth hiring uses AI for the same production work and charges you for the decisions.

Will AI replace SEO?

The tooling, largely. The judgement about which searches matter, what to publish from experience, and earning real links, no. AI answers cite clear, sourced, first-hand pages, which makes the person who has something first-hand to say more valuable.

How do you use AI at Cybrial?

Daily: drafting and refactoring code, first drafts of structure that a person rewrites, image processing, research summaries and measurement tooling. Every published figure is read from a real source by a person and every page is written or rewritten and signed by one.
